Fiestas de la Virgen del Carmen – the protectress of fishermen and seafarers
The 16th of July is in Mallorca the most important day for the fishermen. This traditional fiesta is celebrated in all coastal towns and villages in Mallorca, some of the best celebrations are held in Port de Pollença where the activities start at the 5th and end at the 16th of July.In almost all coastal villages the priests come to bless the fishing boats with pictures of the Virgin Carmen, while the local people decorate the boats with flowers and laterns, just impressing and very beautiful. Garlands are thrown into the water to commemorate those who lost their lives at sea and thanks are given to the virgin Carmen for keeping others safe.
In many towns you will find a programme of events – the Mallorcan people love fiestas, so there will be lots of open air concerts on the streets, traditional dances, foam parties for children, correfoc (fire run), activities for everybody and of course fireworks at midnight at the beach, on Sunday, the 14th.
