Sailing on Mallorca – The Sail Racing PalmaVela – Europe’s first major regatta in 2019
In the beginning of May 2019 one of the most important international regattas will take place in Palma. The European sailing calendar 2019 is traditionally inaugurated with the sixteenth edition of Sail Racing PalmaVela, organized as every year by the Real Club Náutico in Palma.

One month before the start of the sixteenth Sail Racing PalmaVela, the regatta has already registered 120 boats from 21 countries and three continents, Europe, Africa and America. Since 2004, the regatta has been gaining in prestige every year.
The regatta offers all types of boats, including some great classic sailing ships. Originally the regatta specialized in big yacht classes like Wally and Maxi, now the Sail Racing PalmaVela also presents regattas for ships like ORC, TP52, IRC, Swan, J80, FF, Dragon as well as classic sailing ships and vintage yachts.
One of the most notable aspects this year will be the majority of the TP52 fleet. Of course the winner of the last Sail Racing PalmaVela, the Argentine team Azzurra, will not be missing, as well as the champions and runners-up in 2018, the American team Quantum Racing and the German Team Platoon. A striking fleet of which 80% was built in 2018 will participate in the Sail Racing PalmaVela; One of the highlights is the premiere of the Russian ship Bronenosec by Vladimir Liubomirov under the heading of Yacht Club Saint Petersburg, whose new TP52 was designed by Spanish naval architect Marcelino Botín.
Noteworthy is also the high participation of the ORC fleet, of which certainly also many of the participants will compete in August for the title of the 38th Copa del Rey.
The Viper 640 class makes its debut at Sail Racing PalmaVela with 15 boats, having recently participated in the 50th Trofeo Pricesa Sofía Iberostar. Attention caught the Viper 640 as she was selected to take part in the 38th Copa del Rey MAPFRE for the women’s cup.
The Sail Racing PalmaVela family will complete large boats such as Wally Cento Magic Carpet Cubed by Maxi Vera and Sir Lindsay Owen-Jones, as well as the IRC fleet, J80, Dragon, Flying Fifteen, Vintage, Classic, Spirit of Tradition and disabled sailboats.
The large number of participants makes the organization of Sail Racing PalmaVela a real logistical challenge for the Club Nautico in Palma. There will be up to four different racetracks and about 150 people will be involved in the event. The aim of the tournament, which has been taking place in Palma since 2004, is not only to achieve sporting goals; it is also about promoting tourism during the off season in Palma and on the island in general.
