Spain – Holidays possible from 21st of June

From 15th of June the Balearic Islands of Spain will receive the first vacationers after a 3-month ban on entry during the corona pandemic. 10.999 German vacationers will travel to Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca in a pilot project as a test.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez of Spain announced by video conference, that Spain will open it’s borders to members of the EU’s Schengen Zone and the UK on June 21. The UK will still be considered part of the EU under the announcement. On request of the Portuguese PM Antonio Costa the Portuguese border will remain shut until July 1. Travellers from other, non Schengen countries will be allowed to come into the country without the need to self quarantine from June 21 onwards. Spain introduced one of Europe’s strictest lockdown after recording its first cases of Covid-19. On March 13 borders were closed and a state of alarm has restricted Spanish citizens from moving freely throughout the country. Something that finally will also end on June 21.

Since Monday the Spanish government gave green light to allow German tourists to visit the Balearic Islands for a pilot test from June 15, one week before Spain will officially open to international guests. This pilot project is designed to assess whether the corona virus safety protocols in airports, holiday destinations and hotels are working in a perfect way from July 1, when tourists will officially be able to return for holidays, without the need to pass the two week quarantine. 10.999 German holidaymakers will be welcomed to the Balearic Islands, which also include Ibiza and Menorca, as part of a ‘travel corridor’. Most of them will be in Mallorca, in safe hotels in Playa de Palma and Alcúdia. The mínimum stay must be five days and there will be no quarantine. Many of the visitors have properties on the islands. The regional Balearic Government had been waiting since weeks for permission to proceed with the plan, finally approved by the central government after a meeting between several ministers. The Project will be the first safe travel corridor Spain has opened with other countries of Europe. Francina Armengol, the president of the Balearic Island, announced: ‘We will be the first región in Spain to open to international tourism under safe conditions’. The Germans have been chosen because of their low death rate during the Corona virus pandemic and Germany is the country where most of Spain’s tourists come from.

Beach bars are open, but there won’t be any parties till the sun comes up, the party locations in Mallorca will remain closed. Mallorca will certainly be very different this year than we know it.
